College Internships
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay and Safari Golf Club sponsor annual paid and unpaid internships for college students interested in interning spring and/or summer semesters/quarters. Other opportunities may occur throughout the year since positions available vary depending on department needs. See below for a list of current positions available.
Conservation Internship
This position will assist the Field Conservation Coordinator in all appropriate aspects of the Zoo’s conservation mission. Typical tasks will include but are not limited to maintaining conservation grants and other record-keeping databases, compiling reports, communicating with grant recipients, organizing print and photograph files, assisting with special events and assisting with the Conservation Lecture Series.
Public Relations Internship
This position will assist the Community Relations department with important day-to-day operations while offering real world experience in the field of public relations. Typical tasks include but are not limited to updating media distribution list, compiling news links, monitoring social media, responding to newsroom image requests, updating media kit, assisting with media, drafting news releases and photo editing.
Graphic Design Internship
This position will assist the Zoo’s Communications Coordinator with Graphic Design work for the Zoo, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and The Wilds. Typical tasks will include but are not limited to assisting in design and creation of publications such as brochures, newsletters, event posters and hand-outs.
Operations Administration Internship
This internship will help the student learn about the business of operating a zoo or theme park. Position will assist with the communications, daily reporting and safety measures for the Operations Department. Duties will include but are not limited to creating daily communication bulletins to Admissions, Aquatics, Rides and Operations office, assisting in training classes, interviewing of team members, assisting with payroll and scheduling, creating weekly newsletters and employee relations programs, serving as key liaison with the Human Resources team, assisting with inventory controls and other daily operations functions.
Guest Relations Internship
This internship will help the student learn about the business of operating a zoo or theme park and will allow them to be an active participant of a growing guest service program at the #1 zoo in the country. Job functions include but are not limited to working in the Guest Relations offices at the Zoo and Zoombezi Bay, assisting at the Call Center, working with the department manager on guest service training initiatives, assisting with employee relations programs and some daily operations duties.
Retail and Merchandising Internship
Position will assist in renovation and design of Zoo retail locations and include extensive hands-on merchandising, display design and in-house promotion. Job functions include but are not limited to designing and creating in-store displays, promotional pieces and sales locations, assisting with daily management of operations and analyzing specialty retail categories.
Food and Beverage Management Internship
Position will assist with daily management functions and projects related to cost of sales analysis and net profit margin tracking. Will learn the key priorities of Food and Beverage management including labor analysis, pricing and menu strategies and budget management.
SPONSORSHIP AND MARKETING INTERNSHIP
Position will assist the Philanthropy team in providing operational and logistical support to meet the needs of our partners, affording the Zoo the chance to better develop new partnerships through market/visitor research and substantially increase sponsorship revenues. Typical tasks include but are not limited to coordinating sponsorship activation logistics, sponsorship stewardship reports and developing/executing a visitor/brand insights survey.
IT Internship
This position will assist the Information Technology (IT) team with providing desktop support, network troubleshooting and assisting with special projects.
Human Resources Internship
This position offers a wide variety of general Human Resources experiences. Duties will include but are not limited to: assisting the Human Resources team in various aspects of recruitment, training, employee relations and day-to-day operations. Will assist with research projects, planning employee events, designing publications and flyers, soliciting donations for employee incentive programs, assisting with diversity initiative, attending job fairs, and performing various types of administrative duties such as typing, filing, copying, faxing, answering routine phone calls, etc.
The Human Resources Department administers the Zoo's Internship program but interns will report directly to individual supervisors in the various departments. We do not provide housing for our interns. It is the responsibility of the intern to arrange and pay for housing and all other associated costs of living for the duration of the internship. All positions will remain open until filled.
