WHAT: A celebration for Beco, the baby Asian elephant’s second birthday.
WHO: Beco the baby Asian elephant who was born at the Columbus Zoo on March 27, 2009.
WHEN: Sunday, March 27, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
WHERE: The Asia Quest mallway in front of the pachyderm building at the Zoo. Media should come to the Zoo’s Business Office located on Jerry Borin Trace north of the Zoo. Media is asked to call in advance to arrange an escort to the area.
WHY: Beco has been winning the hearts of Columbus Zoo guests since his highly anticipated birth on March 27, 2009. His name came from a “Name the Baby Elephant” contest. The winning name “Beco” is a combination of his mother’s name PhoeBE and his father’s name COco.
In celebration of Beco’s second birthday the Zoo will be throwing a party complete with free cake, games and activities, appearances by some of Beco’s friends including Manny Manatee and Polly Polar Bear and more. Beco will also receive a special gift from our keepers to celebrate his big day.
Guests will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of “Beco's Big Year” and have their books signed by author Linda Stanek. Author John Becker will also be in attendance to sign copies of his book “Frenemies.”
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is open 363 days a year 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. after Labor Day. General admission is $14.00 for adults, $9.00 for children ages 2 to 9 and $10.00 for seniors 60+. Children under 2 and Columbus Zoo members are free. The Zoo was named the #1 Zoo in America by USA Travel Guide and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA.)
