Both the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds participate in programs created by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums that use the collective expertise of zoos and aquariums to save species worldwide. These are referred to as SAFE programs (Saving Animals From Extinction).

Why are SAFE programs important?

  • They protect threatened animals, building on established recovery plans and a history of commitment.
  • They prioritize collaboration among AZA member institutions.
  • They implement strategic conservation and stakeholder engagement activities, measuring and reporting conservation progress meticulously.
