We are thrilled to introduce the newest addition to our mandrill family, a baby boy named Link! Born with an innate curiosity about the world around him, Link has been an active explorer since day one. His unique personality and rapid development have captivated our staff and visitors alike.

Personality Quirks

Link's curiosity knows no bounds. From exploring his surroundings to engaging with his caretakers, he is always eager to learn and discover new things. His playful interactions with his siblings, Matilda, Bernard, and Izzy, bring joy to all who witness their antics.

Likes and Dislikes

Link loves training sessions with our keeper staff, especially when he's with his mother, Malaika. He thoroughly enjoys playing with his siblings and finds comfort in their company. However, Link is not a fan of sudden loud noises or being separated from his mom.

Health

We are pleased to report that Link is in excellent health and is hitting all his developmental milestones. Like other mandrill babies, his coloration changes frequently. Interestingly, Link's face has developed black streaks, which is a bit different from the typical gray seen in other mandrill infants. This unique coloration could be due to increased sun exposure, as mandrills often darken under the sun. The vibrant hues of mandrills, particularly the blue and red, can change with their moods—becoming more intense when excited or angered and lighter when calm.

Connection with Other Mandrills

Link enjoys a wonderful relationship with his family. His mother, Malaika, is attentive and allows him to explore independently while keeping a watchful eye. Bernard, his older brother, often stays close, and the two frequently sleep with their mom. During the day, Bernard and Izzy are inseparable playmates, with Link increasingly joining their games. Aunt Matilda, the dominant female, adores Link and often interacts with him through the safety of a mesh barrier, ensuring Malaika's comfort. Hasina, Malaika's sister and Izzy's mother, is another loving presence, often grooming both Malaika and Link. Mosi, the father, plays a less direct role but is an important figure in the group dynamics.

Favorite Pastimes

Link's favorite activities include nursing, trying out solid foods, and, of course, sleeping. These pastimes are essential for his growth and development, providing him with the energy he needs to continue exploring his vibrant world.

We invite you to visit the Columbus Zoo to see Link and his family in action. His playful nature and distinctive personality make him a joy to watch, and we are excited to share his journey with all of you. Welcome to the world, Link!
