The Drive to The Wilds

road on rural land

Once you leave the highway, you'll be greeted with quiet roads that twist and turn through the stunning rural landscape that southeast Ohio offers. With forested areas and vast farmlands on rolling hills, it's a site to behold in itself. And, then, you'll turn down the long road to The Wilds, passing incredible pastures. Look a little further in, and you'll see bison grazing, too.

While you're in the area, visit these nearby attractions, too:

  • The Birding Station at Jeffrey Point. Recognizing the value of the birding community to the future of our organization and conservation in general, The Wilds has worked with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife to construct an observation deck, which is open to the public year-round, seven days a week, at no charge. The Birding Station at Jeffrey Point is a great spot to watch raptors in winter, hear grassland nesting birds in spring and summer, and watch the ospreys returning to the hacksite in the spring. Look for it on State Route 284, between Zion Ridge Road and International Road.
  • Jesse Owens State Park. Located on reclaimed land used for outdoor recreation, Jesse Owens State Park is devoted to promoting environmental stewardship and conservation efforts. You can enjoy activities such as camping, boating, fishing and more at this park, located just 10 miles from The Wilds! Hint: Get a picture inside The Big Muskie!
  • Salt Fork State Park. Spanning across thousands of acres of land and water, Salt Fork State Park has something for every outdoor enthusiast. This park is located just over 30 miles from The Wilds and offers activities such as boating, hiking, golfing, and more.

How Your Visit Helps Endangered Species

Staying the night at The Wilds or taking a winter tour of this vast conservation center significantly contributes to the protection of endangered species. These activities provide essential funding that supports The Wilds' diverse conservation programs aimed at breeding, researching, and rehabilitating threatened wildlife.

By participating in these immersive experiences, visitors not only gain a deeper appreciation for the animals and their habitats but also directly aid in the The Wilds' efforts to preserve biodiversity. The financial contributions from overnight stays and tours enable The Wilds to continue its vital work in creating sustainable environments where endangered species can thrive and eventually be reintroduced into the wild. This holistic approach ensures that both the immediate needs of the animals in our professional care and the long-term goals of conservation are met, fostering a stronger connection between people and nature.
