Keeper Talks at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium are proudly presented by GermainCars. During these talks, guests get the inside scoop on the animals straight from the people who know them best–our Animal Care team. But what do you know about our devoted keepers? Get to know keeper, Erin.
How long have you worked with animals?
I have worked with animals since 2013, when I had my first internship here at the Columbus Zoo. I have been a full-time keeper since 2015.
What is your educational background?
I graduated from Dublin Coffman High School, and I have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Miami University.
How long have you worked at the Columbus Zoo?
I have worked here since 2013, with a brief break for an internship in Florida before I joined the team full time!
What area of the Zoo do you work in?
I work in North America and Polar Frontier.
What is your favorite part of your job related to animals?
In our North America region, we have been able to take in orphans from the wild, and I love sharing their stories with others! It is amazing for people to see creatures that live right here in our country. I also love the bonds I get to form with animals that result from raising babies, to training a behavior with a geriatric animal to better their care.\
Do you have any special bonds with a particular animal or species?
I am considered a “cat lady” within my department. I especially loved our late cougars, Billy and Jessie, and the bond I shared with them. I also really enjoy the cougar “kittens,” Captain Cal, Goldie, and Poppy!
When did you realize that you wanted to work with animals/become a zookeeper?
I have known that I wanted to be a zookeeper for as long as I can remember! While growing up, I came to the Columbus Zoo with my family often. I am lucky to have had parents who encouraged this dream.
What is your favorite Zoo memory?
My favorite memory is when I met my now-husband, Saul, who is a reptile keeper in the Zoo’s Shores & Aquarium region.
What is your favorite animal and why?
DOGS—because they are the best! The Zoo labs are my favorite “co-workers.”
What is your favorite habitat at the Zoo and why?
I love underwater viewing at Polar Frontier! I have loved watching polar bear cubs learn to swim from under there!
If you could switch jobs with another keeper, what animals would you want to work with?
I would switch with the manatee keepers! Getting to SCUBA dive to maintain the habitat while being near those gentle giants is the best job!
Can you give me a fun fact about yourself?
I have run two full marathons!
