We're WILD about Vet Education!
Each year, The Wilds’ Department of Conservation Medicine trains veterinary students and veterinarians from around the world, providing them with an immersive hands-on experience in zoological medicine!
Virtual Training
- Training consists of three days of pre-recorded lectures that allow students to watch at their own pace.
- Lectures involved core subjects like pharmacology, preventive medicine, and neonatal care.
- Several courses were unique to The Wilds, such as managing large herds in large pastures and population medicine.
- Presenters included several department directors, Veterinary Residents and Technicians, and Animal Management Specialists.
Live Training
In addition to lectures, there is a live component to the VetEd course that allowed students to virtually participate in three animal procedures.
These procedures include:
- The review of anesthesia protocols
- How to induce anesthesia in a field setting
- Advanced dental care for aging animals
Participants ask questions via a live chat and receive real-time answers, thanks to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s IT staff who provided technical support to enable live streaming of these procedures occurring in barns and pasture. At the end of the course, participants virtually met with one presenter to network and ask insightful career questions.
This year's VetEd training is about to kick off. Check back for more updates about this vital education opportunity provided by The Wilds!
