The Goualougo Triangle Ape Project (GTAP) in the Republic of Congo aims to preserve wildlife in the Congo Basin by studying the apes, the ecosystems, and the forces that threaten their survival.
This special area is the only place where chimpanzees and gorillas are known to coexist together and even learn from each other.
GTAP focuses on maintaining as much forest as possible and stopping habitat loss while studying the animals and their environment. They actively participate in policy discussions with stakeholders, government agencies, industry representatives, and NGOs.
The Columbus Zoo's Involvement
- The Columbus Zoo works with GTAP to engage the community and empower them to aid these essential species.
- We also plan to improve and expand the ape health monitoring to develop a better understanding of gorilla behavior to address health risks posed by research presence and tourism visitation.
