Manatees are marine mammals that live in warm shallow water, and several are being rehabilitated at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium!
They like shallow waterways because that is where they find their favorite food...plants!
Manatees often encounter problems where they live in the wild, like collisions with boat propellers, pollution, cold stress and discarded fishing line.
The Columbus Zoo participates in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Program. When a sick, injured or orphaned manatee is rescued and transported to the Zoo, the Animal Care staff and veterinarian staff work together to rehabilitate the manatee with the goal of releasing the healthy manatee back to the wild.
OhioHealth Tip: Water is vital for manatees...and humans. Water keeps your organs working, cushions your joints, and removes waste from your body. We need to be drinking about 64 ounces of water a day — more in the summer months when it’s hot or if you’re sweating from exercise.
