Since the Polar Bears are built for the cold, how do they tolerate the hot summer temperatures found here in Ohio?
Their habitat here at the Columbus Zoo has a chilled pool, trees for shade and the bears have a 24-hour access to air conditioned dens. Their keepers prepare ice blocks for them in the summer and they can dive from the rocks and enjoy a nice cool swim in their pool. The Animal Care staff also provides plenty of enrichment for our polar bears by providing plastic barrels and toys for them to play with and there is even live fish in their pool that they can chase and hunt.
OhioHealth Tip: Remember to drink plenty of water to rehydrate and continually replenish liquids your body uses. Most moderately active adults need at least 8 cups of water each day. This is just as important during the sweltering summer months as it is during the cooler months.
