POWELL, OH — Celebrate an impactful evening with a global reach at the Rwandan Fête from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. This inspirational, annual fundraiser is marking its 30th year of supporting Partners In Conservation (PIC), the Columbus Zoo’s longest-running conservation initiative benefiting wildlife and humanitarian efforts in central Africa.

The Fête embodies the Rwandan cultural spirit through live music, an African marketplace, and an elegant African-inspired meal. Guests will also have the opportunity to hear from international speakers, meet some of the dedicated PIC team members, and participate in live and silent auctions, all of which directly support PIC’s core work.

Founded in 1991, PIC’s holistic approach recognizes that effective conservation extends beyond protecting endangered species; it involves empowering local communities who live in close proximity to wildlife. Since its inception, PIC has played a pivotal role in supporting the conservation of wildlife species—particularly the endangered mountain gorilla and critically endangered Grauer’s gorilla, whose populations are threatened by the bushmeat trade and deforestation—while simultaneously helping to improve the lives of people in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

PIC’s efforts in Rwanda, particularly after the 1994 genocide, demonstrate a deep understanding of these interconnections. By addressing socio-economic challenges and providing sustainable alternatives, PIC has helped to transform former poachers into conservation champions and has enhanced local livelihoods through initiatives such as honey production and artisanal crafts, and the establishment of the Ubumwe Community Center, which provides educational opportunities and training for children with disabilities. This personalized approach has not only resulted in conservation success but also improved community resilience and economic stability.

The impact of PIC’s work is driven by strong relationships that are visible through its extensive community involvement and support networks. The organization’s initiatives range from educational programs and infrastructure development to fostering local entrepreneurship and conservation awareness. Annual events like the Rwandan Fête highlight the strong community ties and ongoing support for PIC’s vision. By bringing together Zoo guests and supporters, and sharing the impact of field conservation efforts, PIC inspires a greater appreciation for wildlife and drives action toward a sustainable future. The collaboration between PIC’s volunteers, local communities, and conservation partners underscores a shared commitment to preserving the delicate balance between human and ecological systems, ensuring a lasting legacy for both people and wildlife.

Over the last three decades, PIC has supported more than 60 projects focused in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“This year’s Rwandan Fête celebrates 30 years of impactful work, highlighting the vital partnerships and community support driving our conservation and humanitarian efforts. We are deeply grateful, particularly to our friends and partners in Rwanda, who inspire us daily with their dedication, talent, and vision. Partners In Conservation embodies the Columbus Zoo’s mission of Empowering People. Saving Wildlife., and we look forward to another successful event as we continue to work together to make a positive difference for people and wildlife,” said Partners In Conservation Manager Jeff Ramsey.

Tickets for the Rwandan Fête can be purchased through the Columbus Zoo’s website. Participation in the online auction is open to everyone, and participants do not need to purchase a ticket or attend the event.
