For nearly a century, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has been a cherished and family destination for the Columbus community and beyond.

With its immersive regions, an incredible variety of animals, groundbreaking conservation efforts, and inspiring educational initiatives, the Columbus Zoo is set to embark on a new chapter in the construction of North America Trek.

This project will breathe new life into one of the oldest areas of the Zoo. Many habitats are 25-30 years old and require updates to meet the Zoo’s high standard of animal wellbeing and exceed professional standards for a zoological institution and conservation leader. This construction aims to transform the region, creating a captivating destination where guests can explore and learn about the native species of our beautiful country, including trumpeter swans, river otters, songbird aviaries, bald eagles, black bears, and Mexican wolves.

Thanks to the generosity of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Battelle, the "My House" area is undergoing a remarkable transformation from a location of educational programming for students to an innovative Ohio Center for Wildlife Conservation (OCWC). The OCWC will house a variety of fascinating species native to Ohio, including hellbenders and plains garter snakes, and will provide space to showcase the work of the Zoo's team and other wildlife champions. The OCWC will teach guests about prairie restoration projects and Motus (a tower to track signals from transmitters attached to birds), as well as how to protect Freshwater mussels and burying beetles.

Conservation lies at the core of the Zoo's mission, and the North America Trek project will serve as a shining example for educating guests about indigenous wildlife rescue efforts. The Zoo is dedicated to conserving native wildlife and eagerly anticipates collaborating with ODNR and other wildlife champions.

The Columbus Zoo aims to Save Wildlife by Empowering People. The North America Trek isn't just a project; it promises job creation, economic development, and a deeper impact on Ohio's prosperity. The Zoo's contribution extends far beyond the gates of the Zoo. In 2022, the Zoo contributed a staggering $232.5 million to the state's economy, with net earnings increasing by $72.4 million. Furthermore, it has sustained more than 2,700 jobs across Ohio.

The North America Trek project is estimated to increase the Zoo's overall economic impact by $2 million to $235 million (statewide) and $8 million (local region), and it will also utilize 40-50 different contractors and 375 tradespeople. With this project, the Zoo continues its legacy of creating conservation-focused and natural habitats for the diverse wildlife that call it home.
