Bald eagles have long been a symbol of strength and resilience, and at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, we’re proud to be part of their remarkable conservation story. With the opening of the newly designed bald eagle habitat in the Zoo’s redeveloped North America Trek region, guests will have a whole new way to experience these incredible birds—and we can’t wait for you to see it!
An Immersive Experience Like Never Before
The highlight of the Zoo's new bald eagle habitat is the elevated boardwalk and covered bridge that takes guests right through the heart of the eagles’ home. Spanning approximately 45 feet across the habitat, this 12-foot-wide walkway offers a unique perspective, allowing visitors to see these majestic birds up close while also giving the eagles a bird’s-eye view of their guests.
Our design ensures multiple perching opportunities at different heights, providing both shaded and open spaces for the eagles to rest and observe. Elevated walkways through aviaries are a common feature in many zoos, but what makes this one special is how it seamlessly integrates into the eagles' habitat, allowing guests to feel truly immersed in their world.

Thoughtful Design for All Guests
Accessibility was a key consideration in designing this new space. The boardwalk leading up to the eagle habitat follows ADA-compliant slopes, making it easier for all guests, including those using wheelchairs, strollers, or wagons.
Unlike traditional aviary designs that require vestibules with doors, our new covered bridge features mesh walls on the outside of the structure. This means guests can enter without the need for additional barriers, making for a smoother and more inclusive experience. Additionally, we’ve incorporated glass railings in select viewing areas, ensuring clear sightlines for guests using wheelchairs or anyone wanting an unobstructed view of the eagles in flight or at rest.

A Habitat Designed with Eagles in Mind
Beyond its guest-friendly features, the new habitat was designed to meet the specific needs of our eagles. Compared to their previous home, this habitat is larger and taller, giving the birds more space to explore and perch.
One of the most exciting additions is a custom-designed pool. Some of the eagles in our care have past injuries from their days in the their native range that make entering and exiting water more difficult. This new pool is specifically built to provide a safe and accessible bathing area, allowing all ourthe eagles to enjoy this important natural behavior.
The habitat also includes a safe feeding and medical care area, where our Animal Care team can conduct routine health checks as needed. Since it’s challenging to determine an eagle’s age after they reach 5+ years old, these checkups are essential for monitoring their wellbeing.
Bald Eagles in Ohio: A Conservation Success Story
The Columbus Zoo has a rich history of caring for bald eagles, many of whom were injured in the wild and deemed non-releasable. Seeing these birds up close is a powerful reminder of their inspiring comeback in Ohio. Once on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss and pesticide use, bald eagles have made an incredible recovery thanks to conservation efforts and legal protections. Today, Ohio is home to hundreds of nesting pairs, a testament to the success of wildlife conservation.
As we open this new habitat, we invite you to experience the beauty and strength of these birds in an entirely new way. Whether you’re walking through the covered bridge, watching an eagle perch overhead, or simply appreciating their presence, we hope this space deepens your connection to these iconic birds and their conservation journey.
